Old loyalties vs new avenues

How does one decide between old friends and new acquaintances? How does one decide between old comforts and new opportunities? How does one decide between old devils and new unknowns?

How does one decide between a job that one has grown fond of (and become an acknowledged champ in) and a job that demands charting unknown waters?
